[00:00:00] Welcome to the Business Chop Podcast, where our guests speak on meeting the challenges of entrepreneurship, as well as offer tips and advice on business, marketing, technology, and more. I am your host, Audrey Wiggins. Let's chop it up.
[00:00:17] This week in the U.S., we celebrate a President's Day, a time when we typically reflect on past leaders. And until recently, with the passing of President Jimmy Carter, we had six living former U.S. presidents. These leaders were elected into their positions, but at their core, they shared a desire to improve the lives of their constituents.
[00:00:41] But this week, I want to celebrate and uplift a different kind of leader. The 31 million living entrepreneurs in the U.S. Founders, entrepreneurs driving businesses across the U.S. The sources for that number is HubSpot and EarthWeb and the approximately 582 million business owners worldwide. And that source is from NorthOne.
[00:01:08] So we're celebrating entrepreneur as a leadership. Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of economies worldwide. They take risks, build from scratch, and adapt to changing markets. Many begin with nothing more than a vision, determination, and an unwavering belief that we can make a difference.
[00:01:28] We create jobs, introduce innovation, and most importantly, shape communities. Congratulations to all my fellow entrepreneurs in the greater Cleveland area and around the world. Special shout out to my immediate family members, Jackie, Candice, Audrey IV, I'm number three, Verana Canvanita. And to those in my group's leader, she's in business and pod pros and my own Facebook group, what's happening. Your commitment to growth and leadership is inspiring.
[00:01:59] So let's talk about the excitement of starting a business. If you are listening or watching this episode and are thinking about or are a startup, I envy you. This will be the most exciting time in your business. You will experience the highs and lows and lessons that you will share with others as the years go by. Starting a business is an act of courage.
[00:02:26] It is a declaration of independence, much like the founding of a nation. It requires vision, strategy, resilience, and the belief that you can create something valuable. From the moment you draft your first business plan to the day you make your first sale, every step forward is a testament to your dedication. Entrepreneurs, the backbone of our economy.
[00:02:51] All of us are counted in a significant number of the backbone of America, and I can only imagine the same in other countries. We each offer products and services to make a living, but more than that, we make an impact on those who believe in our offerings. The numbers don't lie. Small businesses account for nearly half of all private sector employment in the U.S.
[00:03:15] Entrepreneurs generate new industries, introduce groundbreaking technologies, and improve the quality of life for millions. Without small businesses and independent ventures, innovation would stall, and job opportunities would diminish. But beyond the numbers, entrepreneurship is about legacy. It's about creating something that lasts beyond the founder's lifetime.
[00:03:39] Whether a small family-owned business, a tech startup, or a service-based company, every entrepreneur leaves an imprint on society. The work influences generations, shaping how people live, work, and interact. The leadership of business owners. While President's Day traditionally honors U.S. leaders, business owners are leaders in their own right. They lead teams, mentor aspiring professionals, and push industries forward.
[00:04:09] Their leadership extends beyond the boardroom, impacting their employees, customers, and communities. Entrepreneurial leadership requires decision-making, strategic thinking, and the ability to inspire others. It means navigating uncertainty, problem-solving under pressure, and keeping an eye on both the day-to-day operations and long-term vision. Leadership in business is not just about profit. It is about purpose. What is your purpose, people?
[00:04:39] Some of the greatest leaders today started small. Think of Sarah Blakely, who built Spanx from a $5,000 investment into a billion-dollar brand. Or Damon John, who turned FUBU from a homemade clothing line into an international fashion empire. They, like many entrepreneurs, exemplify the power of perseverance, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of vision.
[00:05:07] Leaving a legacy in business. One of the most powerful aspects of entrepreneurship is the ability to leave a lasting impact. A business is more than just a means of earning a living. It is a platform for change, innovation, and influence. What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Are you building a business that will continue for generations?
[00:05:33] Are you creating opportunities for others to grow and succeed? Or are you solving a problem that will improve lives beyond your immediate reach? Or are you mentoring and inspiring the next wave of entrepreneurs? Legacy is about more than financial success. It's about the stories you create, the people you help, and the difference you make in the world. The challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship are many.
[00:06:02] Running a business isn't always easy. There will be challenges, economic downturns, competitions, self-doubt. Oh my goodness. But there will also be incredible rewards. The thrill of seeing your vision come to life. The freedom to create your own path. And the satisfaction of impacting others positively. As entrepreneurs, we must remain lifelong learners.
[00:06:30] The business landscape is always evolving. And those who stay adaptable and open to change thrive. Whether it's through new technology, fresh marketing strategies, or innovative business models. Staying ahead means continuously growing. A call to action for entrepreneurs. To all my fellow entrepreneurs, business leaders, and dreamers, this is President's Day. You are presidents. Let's celebrate more than just political leaders.
[00:06:58] Let's celebrate the leaders of today's businesses. Your work matters. Your vision is valuable. Your legacy is being written every day and will shape future generations. So, whether you're starting or you've been in business for decades, keep pushing forward. Keep innovating. Keep leading. The world needs what you have to offer. Happy President's Day to all the entrepreneurs and business owners out there.
[00:07:26] Your leadership, courage, and commitment to making a difference deserve recognition today and every day. And I will be remiss if I don't mention that February is Black History Month. With that, I salute all African American entrepreneurs carrying the torch of leadership on the shoulders of our ancestors.
[00:07:47] Remember, every great nation, every great company, and every great movement started with a leader willing to take a risk. Today, that leader is you. That leader is me. Keep building, keep leading, and keep leaving your mark on the world. I'm Audrey Wiggins, a smart brand builder.
